چکیده
Abstract Purpose The anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a treatment biologically optimizable. analysis microbial balance within digester allows not only to describe and improve efficiency system but also foresee potential variations after biochemical interventions. This work aims highlight methanogenic population in two similar parallel digesters identify bio-indicators for performance inclusion an additive. Methods analysed industrial case study involved parallel, pilot-scale, bio-digesters ACEA Pinerolese Industriale. They had analogous design fed by same OFMSW except additive inclusion. analyses qRT-PCR, on both bio-digesters, have been performed determine impact growth metabolic activity total methanogens, Methanosarcina spp., Methanocorpuscolum Methanospirillus spp. Results Collected data showed that addition biopolymers extracted from compost produced methanogens decrease (7.67 vs. 7.48 6.05 5.69 Log gene copies /mL sludge respectively, T-test p < 0.01) affecting slightly methane yield (-8%). was highest expressed methanogen; however, results suggested involvement highly complex heterogeneous methanogen community. Conclusions Total active modulations are able major bio-methane production even if their shift slight. Globally 3–4% present 12–13% were described. However, biological approach can supply proxy concerning feeding peculiarities. Graphical abstract

A comparative technology assessment of the anaerobic digestion of an organic fraction of municipal solid waste
Anaerobic digestion is the biological degradation process of organic matter under anoxic conditions, with production of methane and inorganic by-products, including carbon dioxide. Over the past years, many studies on anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) have been carried out at a laboratory, bench and pilot scale. This work aims to summarize the main fea...
متن کاملEvaluating inhibition conditions in high-solids anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
High-solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD) processes, when applied to different types of organic fractions of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), may easily be subjected to inhibition due to organic overloading. In this study, a new approach for predicting these phenomena was proposed based on the estimation of the putrescibility (oxygen consumption in 20 h biodegradation, OD(20)) of the organic mixture...
متن کاملMicro-scale anaerobic digestion of point source components of organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
The fermentation characteristics of six specific types of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) were examined, with an emphasis on properties that are needed when designing plug-flow type anaerobic bioreactors. More specifically, the decomposition patterns of a vegetable (cabbage), fruits (banana and citrus peels), fresh leaf litter of bamboo and teak leaves, and paper (newsprin...
متن کاملMixing effect on thermophilic anaerobic digestion of source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
This paper examines the effect of mixing on the performance of thermophilic anaerobic digestion of source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste during the start-up phase and in the absence of an acclimated seed. For this purpose, two digesters were used under similar starting conditions and operated for 235 days with different mixing schemes. While both digesters exhibited a successf...
متن کاملThe anaerobic digestion of solid organic waste.
The accumulation of solid organic waste is thought to be reaching critical levels in almost all regions of the world. These organic wastes require to be managed in a sustainable way to avoid depletion of natural resources, minimize risk to human health, reduce environmental burdens and maintain an overall balance in the ecosystem. A number of methods are currently applied to the treatment and m...
